Chris' Quick Weekend Sports Recap

Hey folks, was in Albany this weekend so I was not able to get anything up here. Hope you enjoyed Mike's posts on the NBA draft, I know I did.

Just wanted to hit on some of the big sports topics of the weekend, in an extremely brief bullet point form.

  • Women's World Cup started Sunday, and I was able to catch the France-Nigeria match. Some of the things I took away from it were that the woman's game is not that far off from the men's game, and if people can get behind a very talented USA they may actually enjoy themselves. That being said the announcers said that only 80% of the tickets were sold, meaning the game isn't as popular ticket wise as the men's game.
  • NHL Draft was Friday and Saturday, and it was relatively uneventful. Mike Nugent-Hopkins went first, which wasn't a surprise but also wasn't the stone cold lock Kyrie was in the NBA. The biggest move was Ryan Smyth being traded back to Edmonton. I watched him play half a season with the Islanders, and there is nothing to not like about this guy. Hopefully he can help a struggling Oilers team.
  • Jim Riggleman gained all my respect on Friday, when he walked out on the Nationals management and quit because they wouldn't give him a new contract. The Nats are not a team with the highest expectations, yet if winning 11 of 12 games doesn't earn you some job security I don't know what does.
  • Seems like the NFL is creeping towards an agreement, at least that's the vibe I'm getting from John Clayton's reporting. Wouldn't be surprised to have an announcement this week, and for the sake of the population I hope that's the case.
Look this week for some World Cup coverage, as well as some more breakdown's of the NBA draft by Mike.
